Things to Know When Getting an LED Light Installation

Being clued up is important when choosing the best lights for your home or office. Not everyone understands all the information on the light bulb box, but the following terminology may shed some light:

  • Lumens: The unit of measurement, ‘lumens’, is vital to know how much light will be emitted. The higher the number of lumens, the brighter the bulb. Different brightness levels would be recommended depending on where you want the lights installed.
  • Wattage: The wattage indicates the amount of power a light bulb consumes. LED lights are preferred because they are energy-efficient, producing bright light with relatively low wattage. This is the most cost-effective option and is favoured in most settings.
  • Beam angle: The beam angle (measured in degrees) refers to the spread of light emitted from a bulb. A narrower spread (15° or lower) is usually used to focus light on objects or features; spotlights (16 - 32°) are the most common or ordinary choice for homes and offices, with a medium spread of light; and floodlights (33° and higher) are used in large areas to illuminate driveways, warehouses or gardens.

Choosing the Best Colour Temperature for Your Lighting Installation.

Most people are now familiar with the terms ‘cool’ or ‘warm’ white, but what exactly do they mean and why are they important? Consider this simplified guide to colour temperatures and where each is commonly used.

Colour temperature is measured in Kelvin (K) and ranges from ‘warm’ to ‘cool’:

  • Warm white (2900K and lower): With an orange/yellow tone, many find this to be a warm and ‘friendly’ colour, creating an ambience suitable for bedrooms, lounges, and dining areas.
  • Cool white (3000K-4900K): This range emits a bright, professional white light often used in offices, kitchens, and workspaces.
  • Daylight (5000K and higher): This tone is crisp and very bright, often appearing bluish white. This range is most common in retail or commercial spaces and outdoors or security lighting.

Knowing these temperatures, consider which you would prefer for the rooms in your home or office. You can also ask our technicians if you have further questions.
